Fuck SI On Campus

I was gonna send this to SI On Campus, but decided I wouldn't waste my time....

I am irate. I just read the most recent issue of SI On Campus, which I read every Wednesday, only to see that my beloved Maryland Terrapins were tabbed as one of the 10 teams to root for the least. And the reasons weren't because of players, coaches, or how the team as whole has performed or acted, it's because of the fans. Because of one incident that brought media attention to our school; because some idiotic fans started to chant, "Fuck you J.J.!".

I don't appreciate the bad rap that Maryland gets from the media. No one likes us, except for a few at ESPN.com, and it stings to see that a team that won the ACC Championship in Men's Basketball, can still be placed 6th in the conference, even though only 1 player left the team. It hurts to see every team from North Carolina (the state) get more respect than us. It hurts that the media can't give us the recognition that we deserve, because of one bad incident.....no, make that two.

Len Bias still haunts us. Many people probably wouldn't think that his horrible death would haunt the school, especially after we won the National Championship in 2002, but it does. It haunts us in the fact that we are still outcasts in a conference we helped create. It haunts us in the fact that our school's public image comes first, especially when dealing with athletics. It hurts us with the fact that tradition was killed when Leonard Bias died. The school's image was tarnished, and a lot of alumni don't want that to happen again, which is why one of the better traditions at our school, in recent history, got canned. That's why when our student section was named "The Red Army", something students got excited about, it was immediately taken away.

I will admit it, I'm embarrassed by our fans sometimes, and I know that incidents occurred that don't help our image (Carlos Boozer's mom, the J.J. debacle), but we're not bad fans. We love our team and that's why we chanted "Hey! You Suck! We're gonna beat the hell out of you and you and you and you!" I think our behavior is much better than fans who brought bags of "cocaine" to games and shoved it in DJ Strawberry's face, or yelled "Crack Baby" to him. Same thing happened to Juan Dixon, but no one gives a shit about that, they just give a shit when one of the perfect Duke players gets verbally abused.

Fuck SI On Campus.

Maryland students (at least some) have pride and we need to shut the douchebags up this year and show the world that we're the best fans in the land!

FUCK DUKE!
